The environmental impact assessments for the Navakka and Wellamo offshore wind power projects are progressing
The Southwest Finland Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment has issued statements on the EIA programs for the Navakka and Wellamo offshore wind projects, respectively. Following public display, both projects are advancing to the EIA reporting phase.
The Southwest Finland Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment has issued statements on the EIA programs for the Navakka and Wellamo offshore wind projects, respectively. Following public display, both projects are advancing to the EIA reporting phase.
The Navakka offshore wind power project, planned 30 kilometers off the coasts of Pori and Merikarvia within Finland’s economic zone, aims to support the green transition with its 670 square kilometers area and 70–100 turbines. With a 1.5 GW capacity, it will generate 6.5–7 TWh of renewable energy annually for Finland, aiding the country’s climate goals and providing significant economic and employment benefits nationwide.
The Wellamo offshore wind power project comprises an offshore wind farm with floating foundations 90 kilometers off the Satakunta coast in the Bothnian Sea, within Finland’s economic zone. The wind farm is spanning about 1,000 square kilometers, proposes installing around 100 turbines with heights up to 360 meters. The farm could generate 2,000 MW, supplying 8–9 TWh of renewable electricity to Finland’s grid annually.
In the first phase of the EIA (Environmental Impact Assessment) process, a program was produced that presented the project, its alternatives, and assessment methods. This phase is now concluding as the Southwest Finland Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment, serving as the coordinating authority, has issued its statement.
On June 17, 2023, the Navakka offshore wind power project got its statement on the environmental impact assessment program. Next, the environmental impact assessment procedure for the project will proceed to the EIA reporting phase where the studies planned in the program phase are implemented. The report is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.
Further, on December 22, the Southwest Finland Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment issued a statement from the coordinating authority on the environmental impact assessment program (EIA program) for the Wellamo offshore wind power project. The project will also next move to the EIA report phase.
