Tahkoluoto Offshore Wind Extension Proceeds Without Demonstration Phase
Tahkoluoto Offshore Oy has decided to move forward with the Tahkoluoto Offshore Wind Farm Extension project without the previously planned two-turbine demonstration phase. The demo phase was canceled due to the investment grant's timing constraints and uncertainties around offshore wind property taxation in Finland. This decision does not impact the overall scope or timeline of the Extension project.
The demonstration phase aimed to test large-scale offshore wind turbines, foundation designs, and deep-water construction methods (15–45 m depths). It included plans for two 15 MW turbines and had secured €30 million in funding from Finland’s Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment. However, schedule changes ultimately made the project infeasible.
Despite this setback, the company continues preparations for the Extension project, with an investment decision targeted for late 2026 and construction planned for 2027–2029.
Even in a challenging market, the Extension project is Finland’s most advanced offshore wind initiative and the only one on track for completion this decade.
About Tahkoluoto Offshore Wind Farm and the Extension Project
The Tahkoluoto offshore wind farm, built in 2017, is Finland’s first and the only offshore wind farm globally operating in icy sea conditions. Owned by Suomen Hyötytuuli Oy, it features 11 turbines.
The planned Extension project, owned by Tahkoluoto Offshore Oy, will add 40 turbines (15–20 MW each) located 4–22 km from the coast at depths of 15–45 m. Construction is expected to run from 2027 to 2029.
