Nordic Ren-Gas is developing a hydrogen investment worth over one billion euros in Pori
Nordic Ren-Gas Oy (Ren-Gas) has signed a reservation agreement with the City of Pori for a plot in the Kirrinsanta industrial area. Ren-Gas is planning a 300 MW e-methane project in the area, which represents Finland's largest single hydrogen investment. The collaboration on carbon capture initiated with Pori Energia in Aittaluoto in 2023, along with the excellent infrastructure in the Kirrinsanta area, enables the competitive production of renewable e-methane in Pori.
Ren-Gas has signed a reservation agreement with the City of Pori for a plot located in the newly developed Kirrinsanta industrial area. Ren-Gas is starting the development of Finland’s largest hydrogen project in Kirrinsanta, Pori, where it plans to build an e-methane production facility with approximately 300 MW of hydrogen capacity. The total investment cost for the project exceeds one billion euros. The renewable e-methane produced will be used in heavy road transport and European maritime transport, significantly reducing emissions in the transport sector.
Ren-Gas will immediately initiate the environmental impact assessment for the project. The hydrogen and e-methane production facility in Kirrinsanta will utilize biogenic carbon dioxide captured from the Aittaluoto power plant. This project development, starting now in Kirrinsanta, strongly supports the long-term collaboration between Ren-Gas and Pori Energia in advancing carbon capture and utilization. The captured carbon dioxide will be transported from Aittaluoto to Kirrinsanta by trucks, where it will be processed into renewable fuel. Ren-Gas has extensive experience in implementing multi-site projects from its previous undertakings.
The excellent infrastructure in the Kirrinsanta industrial area enables the development and implementation of this major e-methane project. There is a rapidly growing European demand for renewable e-fuels, and Pori is well-positioned to meet this demand efficiently by utilizing existing infrastructure. Locally, the project will have positive environmental and employment impacts. The process heat from the e-methane production facility in Kirrinsanta will be used to supply district heating to Pori’s district heating network, contributing to significant emission reductions in the heating sector. The project is expected to create around 2,000 person-years of employment during the construction phase and 50 permanent jobs during its operational phase in Pori.
“I am very pleased that we can develop such an important and tangible clean energy project in Kirrinsanta, Pori. It’s fantastic to continue our close collaboration with Pori Energia on this project, which will also ensure the efficient use of the carbon dioxide captured in Aittaluoto,” said Ren-Gas’ Project Development Manager, Sara Soini.
“Our carbon capture project in Aittaluoto is progressing well in cooperation with Ren-Gas, and the larger-than-expected volumes of CO2 and district heating from the Kirrinsanta e-methane facility make the overall project even more interesting for Pori Energia,” said Eero Niemitalo, Director of Energy Services at Pori Energia Oy.
“This type of project is a prime example of how the infrastructure in Meri-Pori can best support new industrial initiatives. There is a strong industrial infrastructure there, and Pori’s land-use planning is enhancing its utilization,” enthused Lauri Inna, Mayor of Pori.
Ren-Gas has been developing the carbon capture project in Aittaluoto in cooperation with Pori Energia since 2023. Following the signing of the plot reservation agreement, Ren-Gas will immediately start the environmental impact assessment for the Kirrinsanta project area. Finland’s largest e-methane project is currently scheduled to be operational by 2028.
